​The case of Iturralde vs Hilo Medical Center USA presents a number of ethical issues leading to this malpractice case.  The first ethical issue in the process of medical care provided to Arturo Iturralde is the issue of obtaining informed consent.  During Mr. Iturralde’s stay at Hilo Medical Hospital, he was not provided with a translator while being educated on his new medical diagnosis of degenerative spondylolisthesis L4–5 with stenosis and need for surgery to correct his spine.  It is imperative that the physician educate the patient prior to obtaining a signature and document the education provided to the patient because consent can easily be questioned. “Therefore, accurate, adequate and relevant information must be provided truthfully in a form (using non-scientific terms) and language that the patient can understand.
