Prison overcrowding is a serious threat to public safety, state budgets and federal
budgets.  The prison systems in the United states holds more than 2.4 million people
in 1,719 state prisons, 102 federal prisons, 2,259 juvenile correctional facilities, 3,283
jails, and 79 Indian Country jails as well as in military prisons, immigration detention centers
civil commitment centers, and prisons in the U.S. territories. This total gives the United states

people are released from federal and state prisons. It’s hard to imagine, but almost 12 million 
people are in and out of jail each year. This is amazing to think about, both cost and logistically
